Brief

Our client and their family have outgrown their 2-bedroom house, but rather than move from a location they love, they have opted to extend and remodel giving them an opportunity to design a home that is just the right size and tailored specifically to the way they want to live.

The garage and existing veranda extension were in very poor condition, not well used and cut off the main living areas from the garden. However, these existing extensions had a sizeable footprint, and if rebuilt and better integrated with the house, could provide the additional space they needed.

Design

The developed proposal was to remove several existing walls to form a connected central living space, leading to a new kitchen, utility and family bathroom to one side of the property. The extension continues to the other side to create a small, enclosed home office / guest bedroom accessed off the main living space.

Relocating the main bathroom at the ground floor allowed for the first-floor bathroom to be replaced with a third bedroom. To offset the loss of facilities at this level, the new extension steps up at one end creating a space for a toilet and shower.

The client wanted the new extension to be distinctive, but with a restrained appearance. The design incorporates vertical cladding treated with the traditional Japanese technique known as Shou Sugi Ban. A traditional Japanese process using heat to char the timber, raising the grain and giving it a beautiful dark and longer lasting appearance.
